The soap world has suffered another significant loss. Larkin Malloy, known for roles on All My Children, The Edge of Night, and Guiding Light has died at the age of 62.
"Just got word that Larkin Malloy, who played my brother Travis on All My Children, died of complications from a heart attack he suffered on Saturday," Walt Willey (Jackson Montgomery) shared on Facebook. "Larkin Malloy welcomed me like a brother when I joined the cast in 1987. We worked together, did appearances together, partied together, vacationed together. He was an 'actor's actor,' spending many years teaching the craft, and a gentleman in the Old World style. We spent many hours together, both on set and off, and truly were 'Irish brothers from another mother.' Tommy, you will be missed. Love you, brother."
Malloy was born Thomas Larkin Malloy on September 24, 1954, in New York City. Larkin started working as a professional actor in 1974 on the New York stage where he was a founding member of the off-off-Broadway company ATA. He traveled for several years, appearing on various stages around the country. He eventually returned to New York and landed a job as Schuyler "Sky" Whitney on ABC's Edge of Night, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Actor category. For a period of time, he appeared as Sky at night and as Kyle Sampson in daytime on Guiding Light. In 1987, Larkin joined the cast of All My Children as Travis Montgomery, one of Erica Kane's many men.
Malloy also worked behind the scenes in daytime television. He directed for Another World and later became the on-site acting coach at As the World Turns. During his seven years coaching at ATWT, nine of his actors were nominated for Daytime Emmy awards.
Malloy taught the on-camera acting class at the Weist-Barron School and served on the faculty of The New York Conservatory for the Dramatic Arts.
More recently, Malloy appeared in the Emmy-nominated series Tainted Dreams. He also worked as a private acting coach.
"We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of actor Larkin Malloy. He will forever be remembered to our ABC audience for his captivating portrayals of Travis Montgomery on All My Children and Schuyler Whitney on The Edge of Night," ABC said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."
In a 2011 interview with Soap Central, Willey and Malloy recalled some of their first scenes together.
"I was running for the Senate, and I made you my campaign manager," Malloy recalled. "I had forgotten about that Senate race, in which you were guilty of some malfeasance."
"Yes, yes. I'm sorry about that. I am," Willey replied with a hearty laugh.
"It's perfectly okay," Malloy quipped. "Who wants to be a senator, anyway?"
While his character may not have earned a spot in Washington, Malloy most definitely earned a spot in the hearts of many daytime fans.
