Tony winner. Those are the two words that will now forever serve as a prefix for One Life to Live alum Renée Elise Goldsberry (ex-Evangeline Williamson). The fan favorite was the winner of a Tony Award in this year's Best Featured Actress in a Musical category for her work in the hit musical Hamilton.
Upon taking the stage to accept her award, Goldsberry thanked everyone involved in Hamilton, but it was her emotional revelation of her struggle to have children that was the most powerful moment of her speech.
"If you know anything about me, you know I've spent the last ten years just trying to have children," Goldsberry said in her acceptance speech. "I get to testify in front of all of you that the Lord gave me Benjamin and Brielle, and he still gave me this," she said in her speech, calling out her children while holding her Tony Award.
Goldsberry later told People, "People have been saying, this is a dream come true. And it is a dream come true. But in a different way. What I did pray about for the last ten years is my family. Because I used to always say, if at the end of my life, I'm surrounded by Tonys and Oscars and Emmys, I don't think it's going to feel as good when I [pass] as it would feel as if I'm surrounded by a lot of children and grandchildren."
Hamilton has been one of the biggest Broadway success stories in history. The show is sold out for the foreseeable future and has become one of the rare Broadway shows to cross over into pop culture.
Goldsberry was nominated in 2006 and 2007 for Daytime Emmys in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category.
